According to current research, many of today’s most challenging, costly, and debilitating conditions, including a variety of age-related diseases, are now recognized as being closely related to dietary and lifestyle habits and genetic predisposition. The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s innovative Clinical Nutrition/Functional Medicine Training Program has been created with the faculty from the Institute of Functional Medicine to train medical doctors and healthcare providers in all specialty areas and clinical settings to more effectively apply science, research, and clinical applications of nutrition to treat and prevent disease as well as promote and maintain health.
Areas of Concentration Include:
– Nutrition assessment and nutrition physical exam
– Insulin resistance, cardiometabolic syndrome, obesity
– Gastrointestinal dysfunction and links to chronic disease
– The role of inflammation and immune dysregulation
– Influence of lifestyle and environment on an individual’s genetic risk.
– Hormonal imbalance including adrenal, thyroid, and sex hormones
– Oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neurological disorders
– Food sensitivities, allergies and intolerances
– Toxins and impaired detoxification and biotransformation
– Implications of nutrient deficiencies
– Nutritional research and nutrient protocols
